Good Will Hinton Interviews Mary Jane Mahan, author of "Love At The Pub"

Check out the new interview with Mary Jane Mahan, author of "Love At The Pub". I love this story that Mary Jane tells about a great pub and more importantly a great place for community and conversation. The Brick Store Pub in Decatur, GA is one of my favorite places in the world, as much for the great community as for the world-class beer.

In this interview, Mary Jane and I discuss how she came up with the idea for her book, the importance of "Third Place" for community, and love for great conversation, community, and beer.

Cheers!

Beer Recommendations for Obama's Beer Summit With Gates and Crowley

Much of the news of the past week has been dominated by the story of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates being arrested at his home by Cambridge police officer James Crowley. At a press conference last week, President Obama addressed this issue and eventually suggested that Gates and Crowley join Obama at the White House to discuss things over a beer. While most talk surrounding this story has been about questions of race and law, I'd like to address the beer question. Specifically, what beer would be appropriate for Obama to serve?

Let me first preface my recommendations by stating that I hope and pray that Obama will eschew the typical American offerings of Bud/Miller/Michelob/Coors. Would Obama serve boxed wine or jug wine at a meeting at the White House? I don't think so; therefore he shouldn't serve the beer equivalent.

Additionally, while it is often recognized that Belgium makes the best beer in the world along with Germany and England, I think we can assume that Obama is going to serve American beer.

So Mr. President, if you are reading this...try one of these world-class American beers. read more »

Beer: The New Wine

Why is it that the same people who would never in a million years drink wine from a box have no problem drinking the beer equivalent?

I have started to wonder about this over the past few years as I have explored the breadth and depth of the beer world. I remember having dinner with some co-workers a few years ago that involved sampling various high quality wines from around the world yet playing golf with the same co-workers who were satisfied with Coors Light.

So what happened to me? How did I go from not drinking at all, to occasionally having a Corona or Heineken with co-workers, to now drinking beers like Dogfish Head's 90 Minute IPA or a St. Bernardus Abt. 12 trappist ale in a chalice? read more »

Questions About Patriotism

Over at my blog, my co-blogger, CK, has asked the following questions. My readers aren't commenting, but I think these questions deserve a bigger audience. What do you think?

What is patriotism? What is nationalism? How are the two the same? How are they different? Is it possible for a Christian to be a patriot? How much of what is called patriotism in the United States in the current age is actually nationalism? Dictionary definitions will get you no points unless you use them as a jumping off point for your own exploration and thought of the aforementioned questions!

Updated Top 10 Beer List

I am drinking my new favorite beer tonight so I thought that I should update my list...

10. Duvel

This is a classic Belgian strong ale and particularly great in the summer. I used to not drink this much as it seemed too much of a cliche. But it is such a great beer that I keep coming back to it. It has a wonderfully crisp taste with a hint of apple. But don't be fooled by the lightness; it packs a punch at 9% alcohol.

Top 50 Places to Have a Beer in America

I am among the most unlikely people anywhere to have become a beer afficianado, what with growing up in a Southern Baptist home that viewed alcohol as being "of the devil". Maybe the old adage of learning to appreciate certain things as one ages is especially true for me.

Whatever the reason, I have become a big fan of good beer. I should clarify that my love of beer does not involve massive quantities of mediocre beer but moderate quantities of world class beer.

I am also fortunate to live in perhaps the most underrated beers towns in America, Atlanta, GA. Two years ago, the selection was pathetic here. My, how far we have come. read more »
